After David Oyelowo and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o put pen to paper on starring in Queen of Katwe, a true life true-life Cinderella story about the rise of a young Ugandan Chess prodigy, speculation has been on who would make the cast.
Moles have learnt that the Mira Nair directed film, which is budgeted at around $15m recently threw the casting nets out and managed to arrive at a shortlist of over 50 after many celebs were weeded out.
With the downsizing already in place, we have learnt that some of our local celebs went through screening, almost two weeks ago and some have already started sniffing the dime, while others have already started working with the three production companies that include, Disney World, Moonlighting South Africa and Talking films, Uganda.
Although Michael Wawuyo’s name wasn’t on the semi-final list we chanced upon, we have learnt that he is very pivotal. Alongside Wawuyo is his daughter, Fun Factory’s Emma Kakai who was shortlisted in the Production department alongside Rehema Nanfuka (Africa Movie Academy Award’s Most Promising Actress) and KFM’s Solomon Sean Oseku.
Other notable names include Mustaque Abdullah (cameras), Gloria Wavamunno, Sylvia Kawalya, and Isabella Asiimwe (costumes / make up). Others are Okuyo Joel Atiku and Edward Echwalu (art department) among others.
The film is based on a book The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, And One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster.
It tells the story of Phiona Mutesi who emerged out of a slum in Uganda to reach the World Chess Olympiad with the help and belief of her coach-mentor Robert Katende. (Oyelowo). Nyong’o will play Harriet Mutesi, Phiona’s young mother.
