As far as success in the NSSF-KAVC International is concerned, Ugandan clubs would look at the results with a sly smile and perhaps even a bit of amusement. This is literally because they have often failed to live up to their billing in the regional tournament, with their Rwandan counter parts accruing the bragging rights.
And when the 20th Edition of the two day annual championship gets under way tomorrow, a herculean task awaits local teams if they stand a chance to get their hands the millions of money at stake. Despite playing in front of their partisan crowds and the stellar reputation of the league, local sides have for, quite some time failed to translate their ability into results in the invitational tournament. Rwandan teams have instead shone on the foreign land.
The undeniable truth is that Ugandan clubs are expected to threaten to come out the best. However, when it comes to surmounting the last hurdle- finals- they lag behind Rwandan teams. You can’t look past Rwanda Revenue Authority (Ladies) and Inatek (Men) as the main contenders to take home the prize money this weekend. In ladies Category, Sport –S ladies could be worth a punt because their recent A-Class performances that have seen them win the Rwanda Genocide, but even they donot have the talent in their squad that is on a par with Pipeline and RRA.
Vision Volleyball Camp, Ndejje Elites and KAVC ladies are also earmarked to put up a fight. With the exception of 2014 unheralded champions Sky Volleyball Club men, the men’s wing doesn’t make for a good reading in recent memory- the landmine being a certain Inatek who have emerged victors on two times on a bounce. Uganda’s hopes will solely lay on 2016 genocide runners up Sport-S , Nemostars and KAVC. This year event will see teams from Kenya ,Rwanda, Tanzania, and DR Congo have confirmed participation. From Kenya Prisons , GSU and pipeline, University of Nairobi ,Cooperative bank, while Rwanda has been represented by Defending champions Rwanda Revenue Authority , Rayon Sport, APR, Inatek and Kigali Volleyball club. Burundi has Rukinzo and Muzinga.
