Ugandans had earlier jubilated to the news that singer Ykee Benda would be performing at the opening of the Russia 2018 World Cup.
This was after the his World Cup Coca-Cola theme song, “Colours” with Jason Derulo ft. Ira Roscoe was released before the official opening.
In a special interview, Ykee Benda has confessed that he played around with a sweet lie created by the media.
He denies ever telling anyone that he was going to perform in Russia. As millions witnessed at the opening ceremony on Thursday, It was Robbie Williams who performed. Not even American singer Jason Derulo was anywhere near a microphone in Russia.
According to Ykee Benda, he will be travelling to Russia mid next month, not as a performer but as a guest to watch a couple of games.
“Truth is I am going to Russia. I will be there by July 15th but I will not sing. However, this also calls for celebration,” he said.
He later confessed about the Russia talk. “I went with the vibe. The media created a fantasy story about Russia and I went with it. I never said I was going to Russia to perform. I was contacted and got a deal to sing with Jason Derulo. We enjoyed it and that was it,” he said.
He says that Ugandans are good at jumping at conclusions and his example is just one of them.
In similar news, Derulo missed from the World Cup opening ceremony despite promising to sing the official tournament song in front 80,000 football fans in Moscow and a multi-million global TV audience.
The singer had revealed he would be performing his new song Colors at the opening ceremony at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium and would also use the visit to try and find a girlfriend.
He never performed as his name was dropped from the ceremony’s official running order with Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina left to headline the event.
