Forget about previous reports. The Kampala Sun can confirm that Oscar Award winning star of 12 Years a Slave Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is in town – Kampala. Lupita Nyong’o and movie director Mira Nair will be at the Maisha Foundation fundraising event at the Maisha Gardens on today March 28 . To be in the same space and breathe the same air (oxygen and carbon dioxide) with the Oscar winning star, one will have to part with only $100 (Sh280, 000). Maisha alumni will only part with $50 (Sh140, 000). You cannot conveniently choose to be Maisha alumni right now!
Lupita is also here to shoot the film “Queen of katwe” directed by Mira Nair. The film is based on an article and book by Tim Crothers for ESPN 2011 magazine. It documents the life of Phionah Mutesi, a slum girl who, with the help of Robert Katende, emerged from the crammed shacks of Katwe slums, Uganda to become a Woman Candidate Master after her performance at the World Chess Olympiad.
In the film Lupita plays Phionah’s mother, Harriet Mutesi. The film will also see David Oyelowo, who portrayed Martin Luther King in the movie Selma Act as Robert Katende who initiated Phionah into the world of chess.
