Its hard to take singer, Daniel Kazibwe alias Ragga Dee seriously. His style of music and lyrics would make good comedy script.Even when you meet him as Daniel Kazibwe and not Ragga Dee, a family man, and the many business cloaks he wears, it’s hard to look beyond the joker in him.
So when he announced his bid for the Kampala mayoral seat in the upcoming 2016 elections, his opponents and the rest of the nation were plagued by laughter.
But yesterday, Monday September 15th, every one that has been mocking him thinking he was going to be another of the many political jokers, like Paddy Bitama (R.I.P) his lookalike, began regarding him as a force to reckon with.
A mammoth crowd showed up for the launch of his campaigns as the Kampala Lord Mayor at Kibuye, Kataka grounds, a stone’s throw from Kibuye Police Station.
Several upcoming artistes and more established artistes like Pallaso, Ziza Bafana, Buchaman, Papa Cidy among others performed for the excited crowd and urged everyone to vote for their colleague in the September 25 NRM primaries to carry the party ticket and finally next year to become the new Kampala Lord Mayor.
Ragga Dee made a grand entry in his monster white Escalade UAR 333C along other yellow vans with adorned with the President’s pictures and the singer’s; he was driving in company of rally ace youthful Shafik Ssemujju who is seeking to be elected as the Makindye West LCV Councilor.
We cannot tell why the singer and the rally driver are too close but all we can tell is that they are working closely to promote each other and even on the podium they went together to speak to the massive crowd.
“I was born in this city, I have grown in this city and all that I have is because Kampala exists and it is the time for me now to contribute to this beautiful city and make it the top city in East and central Africa and I can only do that if you give me your support and trust; I am not a talker but a performer and I have lined up so many artistes for you to enjoy the day but you know what to do because you are sharp,” Ragga dee told the crowd.
In a private conversation with Ziza Bafana, the dancehall star said that artistes are ready to give whatever support he needs to ensure he enters the city hall next year.
“We are actively mobilizing the people around the city to vote for our colleague; because he has proved to be a good leader at various fronts and he has enough leadership skills that suit the Kampala Lord Mayor seat and we believe our fans won’t disappoint us,” said Ziza.
Ragga Dee threw the crowd into rib-breaking laughter when he said that the bad leadership has made him and his family suffer as he has not been able to stage any single show in over 5 years.
“I hear you have to stake sh40m to stage a show in Kampala and am not Balam! You are aware Ziza Bafana’s show was cancelled because the current leadership does not understand the various groups of people; I have suffered together with my family because I have not staged a show for over five years in Kampala but why!!!! I understand the issues of Taxi operators, Hawkers, roadside vendors, bodaboda riders, artistes, among other smaller groups so entrust me,” said Ragga Dee.
He is not the only artiste taking a break to concentrate on politics, Judith Babirye is seeking to become Buikwe District Woman MP through NRM, Eddie Yawe is standing for Kira Municipality through DP, and one hit wonder and former police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba is standing too.
Will the popularity and status of the artistes give them an edge over their opponents? Watch this space.
