Comedian/actor, Chris Rock’s opening monologue at the Oscar’s yesterday has incited a worldwide debate on social media for the past 24 hours. Mostly because the comedian confronted and demystified a number of controversies that were brewed because of the minority of black actors in Hollywood movie roles and consequently, the Academy awards. His views would, perhaps, have been wielded by anyone. One would argue that any of the whites in the audience or administration of the academy awards would have a similar view. It is his light approach, however, that won over the world. Like the comedian he is, he tackled the controversies with witticisms, marinating his points with hyperbole where necessary and driving the audience (and perhaps, the world that was watching from their TV sets) to a point of agreement. Both the whites and blacks in the audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood were the award ceremony was held, seemed to nod in agreement at whatever he said. Here is a video of his opening monologue.
