Sandra Nguna, 25, was crowned Miss Tourism Busoga 2019/2020 after beating 11 other contestants. Nguna was crowned by the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, who was flanked by Miss World Africa Quiin Abenakyo, on Saturday during the Kagulu rock climbing challenge.
Twelve contestants, selected from the 11 chiefdoms that make up Busoga kingdom, turned up for the pageant on Friday. Nguna, a degree holder with a Bachelors in urban and regional planning, walked away with the Miss Tourism Busoga crown.
Nguna emerged Miss Tourism Busoga after acing the question and answer session.
Phiona Kyeru from Kigulu Chiefdom and Sandra Nabaggala from Butembe Chiefdom were the first and second runner-ups respectively. Nabaggala was also selected as Miss Creativity for the attire she wore during the pageant on Friday.
Tears of joy rolled down Nguna’s cheeks amidst ululation from the crowd. Nguna, Kyeru and Nabaggala posed for photographs with the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and Miss World Africa Quiin Abenakyo.
Although she did not get time to talk to the audience, the new Miss Tourism Busoga region in an earlier interview said she would promote Busoga’s tourism sites and Uganda’s hidden treasure.
“We have wonderful tourist sites like Busoga hill in Bugiri, Kagulu hill in Buyende, Source of the Nile in Jinja, Bishop Hannington Memorial site in Mayuge and I hope to promote and market them,” Nguna said.
Aisha Kakerewe was appointed Miss Congeniality and Sharon Naigaga was appointed Miss Talent.
Hundreds of residents in Kagulu turned up to witness the beauty pageant that was conducted by the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage of Busoga Kingdom.
At about 4:00am after the beauty pageant, the Dj from Host Sounds did what the locals were waiting for, “okukuba omuziki” meaning releasing hit after hit which saw some youth squeezing their loved ones as they danced as if there was no tomorrow.
