Locked down in Ivory Coast, Uganda’s singer and songwriter Kenzo, has been awarded the Gold Play Button by YouTube, for passing one million subscribers.
Kenzo, who is most known globally, for his critically and well produced acclaimed songs is also one of the few channels and musicians from Uganda, that have reached/surpassed the 1 million subscriber mark on YouTube.
YouTube Creator Awards, commonly known as YouTube Play Buttons, are a series of gifts from YouTube that aim to recognise its most popular channels.
They are based on a channel’s subscriber count, but are offered at the sole discretion of YouTube.
Silver play button is achieved at 100,000 subscribers, Gold play button is achieved at 1,000,000 subscribers and a Diamond which is the highest play button is achieved at 10,000,000 subscribers.
As the other musician to achieve this feat was Nigeria’s Flavour, who was awarded his Gold Play Button during the YouTube Week in June 2019.
The trend of these recently recorded successes by Eddy Kenzo validates the global reach and acceptance, of diverse styles of music from the shores of Uganda/East Africa, away from the notion of the ambiguous classification of the genre Afrobeats and the suggestive sound of contemporary African music.
