Singer Freeboy has sued telecom companies over his ‘kwata essimu’ song seeking sh175 million from each. According to him, he tried to engage the two telecom giants – MTN and Airtel starting last but they kept taking him in circles and has now decided to seek legal redress.
Through Katende and Sempebwa advocates, Freeboy has dragged them to the Commercial Division of the High Court. He said he has evidence of the two companies using the song as their caller tune.
He noted that coming from Arua has not made things any easier for him, arguing that blowing up from that part of the country is not an easy task to allow anyone to exploit him.
He claims that every time he calls them, all they do is go silent on him leaving him very heartbroken because it is never going to happen to him alone. He added that the argument revolves around copyright because once an artiste has it, then they have a right to compensation.
The ‘kwata essimu’ that he recorded with songstress Winnie Nwagi was released last year and became an instant hit. It has over 2 million views on YouTube.
